EOMM [SYD] @ Krispy Kreme 31st March 2010

somos March 31st, 2010

A small intimate atmosphere right next to delectable and sugar-rush inducing donuts. While the weather was a bit iffy and the noise from the planes a slight distraction, it could not have been a better place to meet. People came throughout the night, had lengthy chats and food was readily available. The scenes from the night can be found here.

A $500 junkyard car comes third in WRC Mexico

somos March 23rd, 2010

Thanks to “Brucey” in the JDMST forums for the heads up and Jalopnik for this epic underdog story. This is the heartwarming story of Bill Caswell and his perseverance and unbelievable talent. The story of one guy who drove days on a WRC stage with no backing team. Which meant he, the driver, had to become the mechanic after each gruelling stage. Was it mentioned that he actually gets a podium finish? Read more on this story here and here.

Why MX5? When you can Himiko?

somos March 22nd, 2010

“Mitsuoka Himiko” words that generate an image of anime, domokun dolls and ramen. What you least expect then is a car that looks like its been pulled from the tear in space time from the 1940s. One look makes you think the designer is an old man who was forced to make his designs more ‘modern’. Make no mistake though, it isn’t boring. Its an especially intriguing car when you realise that its actually a NC MX5 wearing a Victorian dress. With the same LF-VE engine and 6 speed manual, but with a massive beer gut of an extra 200kg. Still its got double wishbone front, multi-link rear and Bilstein shocks. So always wanted a 1940s blitish cruiser that’s actually a Japanese impostor with a modern suspension setup and svelte body? Look no further than a Mitsuoka Himiko.

Frankenstein Engine Conversions…. what on earth?

somos March 17th, 2010

Have you been to this crazy thread in the forums? It features engine conversions that a more conservative and possibly saner modifyer/tuner would never think of doing. Frankly though it baffles my own sensibilities. Like what happened to a low mounted engine in this RX7 FD like the car was originally made for? Although some others have just wowed me with the craziness like a Ferrari engine in the most unusual car.

There are many other conversions to be found that are beyond belief. The thread is entitled “Engine conversions good or bad” and can be found here.

The Honda Super Cub 52 Years Old

somos March 16th, 2010

Back in 2008, the Honda Super Cub turned 50. And to celebrate the occasion the good people at Honda gave away 60 (1 for each million sold) to 60 artists to create the exhibition Love Cub 50, which was started by fans to celebrate the 50 years of the Honda Super Cub. These one of a kind creations are now being sold off to raise money for Unicef on Yahoo! Japan you can get the link at Japanese Nostalgic Car.

The Honda Super Cub is still sold today in Japan and many parts of the world. So much so that in Vietnam “Honda” is the word for motorcycle. Its been abused by millions, tortured on the Discovery Channel, written about in a few songs and upgraded many many times.

Honda is still working on a proper replacement for the Super Cub, but i think this video, made by Honda, sums it all up.

You can read more about the Super Cub at The World of Honda – Super Cub.

somos March 11th, 2010

In Finland in a small town called Rauma of population 40,000. A man with an outrageous love for all things that go “TSCHHHHH” is our man Joni. He’s had his fair share of cars, but don’t we all go through cars like a anteater on a ant hill? So what makes him special? Read on to find out.

Honda Driving Simulator

wilch March 5th, 2010

Have you ever spent time teaching someone to drive?

That first tentative look at the ignition.  The way their eyes light up as the engine and instrument cluster come to life.  It’s impressive to watch a new-born driver look around the cabin and feel the steering wheel, seated where they have never sat before.  The innocence is refreshing.

…and if it’s a manual.  The unsureness in the face of the new-born as you attempt to explain the “friction point”, motioning your hands as though you were controlling the accelerator and clutch from the passenger seat.  Explaining twice more prior to letting them loose.

You tell them, “ok… Continue Reading »

Old vs. New

Justin Fox March 2nd, 2010

This picture was posted in the Old vs. New thread – can of worms and just my opinion but I think the 32 and the 34 just look so right (and the 33 and 35 just look so wrong). You can see how the R34 evolved from the R32 and the 35 seems to take inspiration from the 33.
